Since 2021, 723,000 kwh of electricity has been used from the EV charge points in Winchester. That’s the equivalent of over 2,500,000 miles driven in an average sized electric vehicle, over 100 times around the world or more than 5 trips to the moon and back!
Fast chargers have been upgraded to rapid chargers at Colebrook and Middle Brook St car parks in Winchester and Basingwell Street car park in Bishops Waltham. New rapid chargers have been installed alongside the existing fast chargers at Worthy Lane, St Peter’s and Harestock car parks. Rapid chargers are also planned for Winchester Sport and Leisure Park and Perins School in Alresford.
Councillor Kelsie Learney, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said: “Switching to electric cars from diesel or petrol will have a huge impact on carbon emissions across the district. We know that many residents want to do this but are worried about not having access to charge points. By increasing the number available – particularly rapid chargers – we hope to be able to give people the confidence to make that switch.”
Reducing transport emissions is a key objective in the council’s Carbon Neutrality Action Plan, working towards being a carbon neutral district by 2030.
